How to prepare

Start early! To prepare your child for the visit, talk to them about what is going to happen and be positive. Have your child practice opening their mouth to prepare them when the dentist measures and checks their teeth. Reading books or watching videos about first visits to the dentist can help your child be less scared and more confident.

Also make a list of questions. If your child is teething , sucking his or her thumb or using a pacifier too much, your dentist can give you some advice.

What to expect during the visit

The dentist will examine your child to make sure that his or her jaw and teeth are growing the way they should. During the visit, you'll sit in the dental chair with your child in your arms if your child can't - or won't - sit in the chair alone.
