YOUR BABY'S FIRST DENTAL VISIT

Your child's first dental visit should take place after the first tooth appears but no later than the first birthday. Why so early? Once your baby has teeth , he or she may develop tooth decay. Being proactive about your child's dental health today can help you keep their smile healthy for life.

How to prepare

Start early! To prepare your child for the visit, talk to them about what is going to happen and be positive. Have your child practice opening their mouth to prepare them when the dentist measures and checks their teeth. Reading books or watching videos about first visits to the dentist can help your child be less scared and more confident.

Also make a list of questions. If your child is teething , sucking his or her thumb or using a pacifier too much, your dentist can give you some advice.

What to expect during the visit

The dentist will examine your child to make sure that his or her jaw and teeth are growing the way they should. During the visit, you'll sit in the dental chair with your child in your arms if your child can't - or won't - sit in the chair alone. The dentist will check for mouth injuries, cavities or other issues. Once this part of the exam is complete, the dentist will clean your child's teeth and give you tips for daily care.

If your child cries a little or shakes during the test, do not worry. It's normal and your dental team understands that this is a new experience for your child!

Tips for a great visit

  • Do not schedule an appointment during sleep. Instead, choose a time when your child is usually rested and cooperative.
  • Make sure your child has eaten a light meal and brushes their teeth before their appointment so they don't get hungry during their visit.
  • Save the snacks for after the visit so they are not in your child's teeth during the exam.
  • Think of the appointment as a joyful and fun experience. If your child becomes upset during the visit, work with your dentist to calm your child down. You're on the same team!
