5 TIPS TO KEEP YOUR TEETH HEALTHY IN THE SUMMER

The summer months are truly upon us. For many, that can mean barbecues, festivals, holidays and trips with friends and family. While the sun brings out a more active lifestyle, it doesn't come without its pitfalls. Especially when it comes to our oral health. It's important during this time to know how to take care of your mouth, teeth and gums. We've put together five simple tips to help you take care of your oral health this summer in the best possible way:

Stick to your routine

It doesn't matter if you're out socialising with friends or staying out late after a night out, it's important to keep up your dental routine. Taking care of your oral health should always remain a priority. Resist the temptation to skip brushing because you have something else on your mind. No matter how busy your summer may be, be sure to brush twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste, in addition to your daily interdental cleaning.

Plan in advance

This time of year can be extremely hectic. That's why it's important to be prepared and give your oral health the attention it deserves before something goes wrong. With vacations and long trips booked, it's a good idea to make a dentist appointment before your holidays. It's also a good idea to stock up on manual toothbrushes or extra brush heads, as well as travel-sized toothpaste and floss.

Stay hydrated, the right way

Staying hydrated, especially when the weather is warmer, is important for the health of your mouth and your overall health. Make sure you make the right choices when selecting beverages. Try to avoid those drinks with high sugar and acid content. Carbonated drinks, fruit juices and energy drinks can be harmful to your oral health. If consumed frequently, they can lead to tooth decay and dental erosion.

Keep your teeth away from "other work"

Often many of us put our oral health at risk by using our teeth as tools for tasks for which they were not intended. Summer offers many opportunities for eating and drinking on the go and out of the house. Avoid using your teeth to open bottles or packages or to hold or carry things when your hands are full. Thousands of unnecessary accidents occur each year when teeth are used improperly. Insist on using your teeth for what they are designed to do.

The right amount of sun for healthier gums

Sunlight is an excellent source of vitamin D, which plays a key role in a healthier immune system. Research also shows that it can boost your oral health by helping to prevent gum disease. Having healthy gums means you can keep your teeth for longer. Gum disease is also linked to heart health, mental health and diabetes, so getting out in the sun could be a great option for a healthy mouth. Make sure you don't stay out in the sun for too long - the risks are well documented. To stay safe, you should always use the right sunscreen and don't forget to protect your lips too, as this is an area that many people forget. Remember, the longer you stay out in the sun unprotected, the more prone you will leave yourself to serious health problems.

By following these recommendations, you can enjoy your summer to the fullest and keep your smile healthy and happy!
