What is stomatitis from dentures?
Denture stomatitis is a very common condition of the oral cavity which requires special treatment. It is caused by fungi of the genus Candida.
Who can get denture stomatitis?
Those who have dentures are more likely to be affected, along with people who have problems keeping their mouths clean. Diabetics and anyone taking steroids, either through inhalation or orally, may also have problems.
Some antibiotics are responsible for causing stomatitis from dentures. Many people find that taking certain antibiotics encourages the recurrence of the infection, especially if taken for a long period of time.
Why does denture stomatitis need immediate treatment?
If left untreated, the condition can cause pain in the mouth and can lead to poorly fitting dentures in the future.
How is denture stomatitis treated?
- Good oral hygiene - It is important to keep your mouth as clean as possible and rinse your mouth and dentures after meals. Smoking also encourages the development of further infections.
- Keeping your dentures clean - Keep your dentures as clean as possible, and certainly all night long.
- Medication - If good oral hygiene and careful cleaning have not helped, you will be given some treatment. There are many treatments available and you may need to continue treatment for a month.
What happens next?
The dentist may want to check your mouth after treatment to make sure everything has gone as it should. If not, he or she may recommend additional treatment. In some cases, you may need to follow treatment for a long time.
