DIABETICS : DO THEY MEET THE REQUIREMENTS FOR PROFESSIONAL TEETH WHITENING?

According to recent studies, diabetics may not qualify for professional teeth whitening services offered by dentists. This is largely due to the fact that the diseases of the gums often occur in people who have this particular medical condition. Medical professionals often refer to gum disease as "periodontal disease". This happens when an infection develops in the soft tissues of the mouth, the tissues that help keep the teeth in place.

There are specific reasons why diabetics are much more likely to develop this condition. The general lack of control of sugar levels in the body plays a big role in the development of gum disease, as it affects saliva and the development of microbes in the area. Also, the slower circulation seen in diabetics compared to those without the disease leads to greater susceptibility to infection in the soft tissues of the gums.

Many dentists, therefore, will not comfortably proceed with a teeth whitening when there is gum disease. Some types of bacteria may not respond favourably to the chemicals in the teeth whitening gels used by dentists.

Although diabetics may not qualify for the teeth whitening offered by a professional dentist, this shouldn't overwhelm them. It has been shown that the teeth whitening kit at home is appropriately and effectively for this group of people. One of the main reasons that makes them safe is that over-the-counter whitening products contain only mild ingredients and in case the patient starts to experience any kind of adverse reactions, they can simply discontinue use and recover quickly. If you are a diabetic who desires a bright, beautiful smile, you can still get it - you just may not be able to get this treatment from your dentist.
