GENETIC TESTING AND YOUR DENTAL HEALTH

Can a genetic test predict the risk of future dental disease or serious gum disease? The answer, for now, is no.

There are various tests commercially available that claim to measure the risk of disease or susceptibility to future diseases. Predictive genetic tests look for clues in your DNA that could show whether you are at risk of developing certain diseases or medical conditions. For these tests, you are often asked to send a saliva sample to the lab. The company monitors the results and may or may not provide a consultation with a physician.

However, just because you have a DNA 'marker' associated with a particular disease, it does not mean that you will eventually develop the disease. This is because there are many diseases in which 'environment' and 'lifestyle' factors also play a role. In fact, these environmental and lifestyle factors control the risk of developing dental or gum disease more than any identified genetic marker.

While genetic testing can improve predictions for future oral health, the tools your dentist is already using during an exam, including x-rays and measurements, are now the best way to know what the state of your oral health is today and what may lie ahead in the future.

Take an active role in preventing dental disease and maintaining oral health by following these simple tips:

  • Brush twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Clean between your teeth once a day
  • Follow a balanced, healthy diet
  • Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups
